One year ago, on my birthday I released a compilation of short stories and Splotch Monster illustrations I had initially made when COVID was at its peak. Influenced by the Stop and Smell the Flowers collaboration with @krisloyaart, I only put this book out as a small, high quality hardcover collection through Blurb Books. Growing up in Pennsylvania, and living in northern Virginia, I feel very fortunate to be able to witness the magic of this time of year that can only be experienced through nature. These little stories and images are a reflection of my love for Autumn, told through the lens of pure imagination. I was invited, last minute to share a table with some of my old comics and cartoonist buddies at the upcoming Small Press Expo in Bethesda, MD, so I’ve been busting my tail off packaging prints, signing books and getting things in order before the big event. Another one from the India ink-based series, this one took on a sort of alien insect appearance. As a kid, I really got into bugs, growing up in a semi-rural, suburban Pennsylvania neighborhood. It was my uncle (Ron) who taught me how to catch grasshoppers without harming them, however I had a healthy fear of insects with stingers and large pinchers, and mostly stayed away from them. Looking for more material for the “Before and After” Splotch Monster book, I found a brief series I worked on a while back that explored finding creatures within papers that I covered entirely in a wash of watercolor. I also did a lot of outlining back then - something I’ve since quit doing a long time ago, but still enjoy seeing it with other people’s work, when doing workshops. Looking for more material for the “Before and After” Splotch Monster book, I found a brief series I worked on a while back that explored finding creatures within papers that I covered entirely in a wash of watercolor. I also did a lot of outlining back then - something I’ve since quit doing a long time ago, but still enjoy seeing it with other people’s work, when doing workshops. One of the animals included in the Endangered Kingdom Splotch Monster series was the axolotl. These critically endangered salamanders don’t ever outgrow their larval stage, making them a sort of Peter Pan of the amphibian world. I remember introducing this animal to my elementary art students about seven or eight years ago, while working on this series, and they weren’t even remotely familiar with it. Now, they’re one of the most popular animals on the planet, thanks to popular and video game culture.
